This is truly one of the best games that I have played in years. And that is no exaggeration.
The game does a really good job of letting you discover the mechanics and it doesn't spoon feed you or hold your hand. I love games that let you discover mechanics, although for some this may be a little scary because as it stands there is no game guide, so you'll have to figure it out on your own. Nothing is so strange or complicated that you can't figure it out on your own.
You start in your main ship. As you proceed through each 'run' you gather the crystals currency and that's used to upgrade the main generator and the sub-generators in the outposts you find between worlds. An upgraded generator in an outpost lets you buy ammo and health before you proceed. The upgraded generator in the main ship allows you to activate one permanent perk per upgrade level. You can't have all perks active at the same time, which is a GOOD thing because it allows you to customize your build depending on what you're trying to achieve. You'll need somewhere around 35,000 total crystals to fully upgrade the ship generator which could be looked at as a bit of a 'grind' but honestly, I felt that it allowed the game to slowly 'reveal' itself and give you time to have fun over many different runs.
You'll find packets of seeds as you play, which on subsequent runs you can plant in your biodome to get various perks. These really help you get a good run going. One gives you crystal protection orbs, one gives you a random perk, etc.
You can build your character in all kinds of different directions, and this is enabled by slowly upgrading your ship with different components that unlock by doing special things in the game. For example, beat the first world using only melee attacks. Or beat the first 2 worlds without using a health kit, etc. This gives you little 'side jobs' you can work towards as you progress through the main campaign.
One of the great aspect of this game is that the progression of unlocking perks gradually changes the game in a great way! For example when you unlock the 'fast dash' perk you might decide to run a dodge build which leaves mines behind, or fire trails. Or you could unlock the 'double melee' damage perk which, paired with other powerups can make a devastating melee build that freezes, burns, zaps and shurikens enemies. What a blast! Once you beat the core game loop, you'll have to figure out how to craft the crystal armor which changes the way you dodge and can help you mitigate damage, and help you complete some of the tougher tasks like not use a health kit for 6 maps!
There is a perfect blend of shooting, dodging and melee. Although from a strategy perspective, you're going to need to master melee attacks if you really want to get good!
The way the upgrade modules are activated was a little baffling to me. Once you repair a ship component you need to melee the lever on the upgraded machine to activate the bonus. But nowhere previously has the game introduced that mechanic... I actually had like 5 upgrades but couldn't figure out WHY they weren't active. Just remember, when you upgrade a ship component... MELEE it to activate it. There were some minor language problems. The description on one perk reads 'creates protection from crystal orbs'. I was wondering WTF a crystal orb was until I realized what it meant was 'summon protective crystal orbs around you'. A few other micro-complaints in this area. Just take your time to read each a few times to deduce what's going on.
The graphics are amazing, and so creative. Excellent animation as well with no corners cut. I love the beefy sound effects and even after 15 hours of play, I feel like I could listen to the game music FOREVER. It's awesome!
With about 450+ reviews under my belt, I can say that this is probably only the 3rd or 4th game that I've ever been confident to say 'BUY AT FULL PRICE'. It's soooooooo good and worth every penny.
